Artist's Description
This is piece 1 of a two piece set.
This painting depicts the spiritual battle against the flesh that every Christian must face throughout their lives.
The birds are a crow, a dove, and a pied cuckoo.
The face on the canvas is in despair, and darkness, like tentacles, threaten to overtake it, it is also fading into the canvas, its features beginning to disappear, the crow, representing judgment and divine law, is about to pounce on the dove which represents love, purity, and all things good. The pied cuckoo represents the flesh, with its inherent tendency to sin, lurking over the dove, the bleeding hearts are all on the vine, but are threatened by the slug, the only pest that bothers that plant. The music plays all the while, sometimes aiding the battle, sometimes hindering, sometimes distracting. The cross is visible, but surrounded by dark clouds and represents the hope in the battle.

However, as adult life took over, she placed her art on the back burner for many years. Vicki still explored her creativity through crafts, sewing, cooking, blogging, and...

I can see that you really thought through what you wanted to do in this work. That cross represents the death of the flesh and the death that it brings along with it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Luke 9:23-24
Vicki Maheu replied:
The next piece really emphasizes the death of the flesh and the freedom found thereafter.
